the Leaning Tower of Britter (Tx). Who needs to go to Pisa when you have Britter?
Oh, by the way, this cross is advertised with typical Texan hyperbole as the largest cross in the Western Hemisphere. 190ft of texas panhandle ingenuity;-)
another part of Aidan's billboard fetish being satisfied ....

More billboards and Texan scenery

D3 - Stroud OK, to Ruidoso, NM (mile 1560 - 2214)

D3, had us leaving Stroud and into Texas. Big State. Everything is big here ... crosses, billboards, trains (we raced a train which was great fun, and the conductor hooting his horn as we flew beside him on the road). Some towns and some of the landscape reminded me of Paris Texas, the Wim Wenders film (with Harry Dean Stanton & Nastassja Kinski), or the Last Picture Show by Peter Bogdanovich (which starred Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd and Timothy Bottoms).
After heading thru Amarillo, we stopped at the Cadillac Ranch, where someone planted cadillacs in a corn field. "if you build it, they will come" says the phrase in Field of Dreams. In this case, tourists come to graffiti-ize their mark on these cars. Quite neat. Requisite shot of our car group. Then onward to Ruidoso, NM. The part of Texas we were in was quite high in altitude. The high plains in fact. Now i understand the clint eastwood film, "High Plains Drifter" ;-)
Into New Mexico we went, on backroads that extend for miles like rods of asphalt. Roswell would be our next stop, aside from petrol breaks and "technical breaks";-) Some members (an unnamed person named Alan) undertook risky operations (watch out for rattlers) in deep brush to take technical breaks;-)
After Roswell, up to Ruidoso. 6968 feet above sea level. Twice the height of Irelands tallest point! Location of the Billy the Kid Hideout Museum!
Top pic is car of ChapterMeister of the MidWest Rgruppe, Curt, and how some unnamed person (Jared) created trucker decals for the mudflaps (rally style homage) and the girl was duly christened "peggy" (have no idea why).

last of D2

Just one more pic on our way across. This was earlier in the morning. By the way, most pics are by the navigator, Aidan.

more d2- dayton effingham stroud

some more pics from the road. Most of what we travelled was the old route 66, and we went thru St. Louis and on into Oklahoma. Tulsa was what we were aiming for, but seeing that spirits were up, we continued on until we got near Oklahoma City. We stopped at a place named Stround. Did you know that in OK, you can buy cold beer less than 3% alcohol, but for beer > 3% alcohol, it cannot be sold to you cold. Warm beer only at that stage. And you have to go to another store to buy ice. Part of the no drinking while driving laws I guess. Only English people could be happy in OK, with abundunt access to warm beer;-)

Day 2 - Mile 690 - mile 1560

Well, we set off from Dayton at 7h30 or so. Made it to Effingham by 12h15, and moved ahead one hour, so we were 11h15 local time and met up with our motley crew from the rest of the midwest. Headed off circa noon local time after the requisite photo op (from the back of a truck). Pushed it to past Tulsa, and just outside of Oklahoma City. Tired but happy. Beers and pizza in the parking lot as restaurants were closed upon arrival late at night. Pics will follow once we stop this evening as was too tired to post them and organize last night. Sad to hear about Paul Newman's death. Great actor and racer. May he rest in peace.
edit --- time to add some pics ... finally a bit of rest from all this fun ;-) By the way, you can tell that my brother Aidan, has a fetish for billboards. He just loves em! Finds them hilarious!
